The global competition for artificial intelligence compute capacity is accelerating — and Southeast Asia is becoming increasingly important to that race.

Australia-based Firmus has signed a multi-year strategic agreement with OpenAI under which the AI company will contract dedicated compute capacity from two Firmus AI Factory sites in Malaysia.

The agreement makes OpenAI an anchor customer of Firmus and pushes Firmus’ total contracted capacity across all customers to more than 900 megawatts.

Firmus currently operates AI data centers in Australia and Singapore, with additional facilities under development across Australia, Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia. The company says its broader portfolio now spans seven AI factories across four countries.

The expansion highlights how AI infrastructure is increasingly becoming a regional rather than purely U.S.-centric industry.

As frontier models require larger amounts of compute, AI developers are seeking reliable access to power, cooling, land and network capacity across multiple jurisdictions.

Malaysia has emerged as one of Southeast Asia’s fastest-growing data-center markets. Its relatively strong infrastructure, regional connectivity and available industrial land have attracted increasing interest from hyperscalers and infrastructure investors.

The Firmus partnership is also strategically important because the company plans to deploy NVIDIA’s next-generation Vera Rubin processors across its Asia-Pacific footprint.

This represents another stage in the vertical integration of the AI economy: semiconductor supply, data-center capacity, electricity infrastructure, cloud services and model development are becoming increasingly interconnected.

For investors, the most important takeaway is that the AI boom is broadening beyond software and GPUs.

Capital is increasingly flowing toward physical infrastructure — including power generation, transmission, cooling, real estate and data-center construction.
