The Strait of Hormuz is becoming more than an oil-market risk. It is increasingly becoming a global macroeconomic variable.

Renewed tensions around the critical Gulf waterway have pushed energy markets higher and disrupted shipping flows, forcing investors to reconsider the relationship between oil, inflation, interest rates and economic growth.

Brent crude climbed to around US$96.22 per barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate traded near US$91.79, extending oil’s rally to a fourth consecutive session and taking prices to six-week highs.

The move is being driven not simply by speculation.

Shipping activity through the Strait of Hormuz has fallen materially. Reuters reported that only six vessels transited the strait on Wednesday, compared with a recent average of approximately 13 vessels, highlighting the growing operational impact of regional tensions on one of the world’s most important energy corridors.

Hormuz Is Changing the Energy Trade Map

For decades, global energy markets were optimized around the shortest and cheapest transportation routes.

That assumption is now being challenged.

Major Asian energy importers are increasingly sourcing crude from suppliers farther away from the Gulf. Japan, South Korea and India have expanded purchases from producers in the Americas and Africa as buyers seek to reduce dependence on vulnerable Middle Eastern routes.

Reuters analysis shows Japan increased U.S. crude imports by more than 400% between March and June 2026, as its Middle Eastern supply declined sharply.

Qatari and UAE LNG suppliers have begun using unusual ship-to-ship transfers outside the Strait of Hormuz to maintain cargo deliveries.

Reuters reported three recent LNG transfers in waters outside the strait, with cargoes ultimately destined for markets including India and Japan.

Asian spot LNG prices have risen to approximately US$23.20 per million British thermal units, more than twice their pre-conflict level.

This matters because LNG is deeply connected to electricity prices, industrial production and manufacturing costs.

A prolonged disruption therefore risks transmitting the Hormuz shock beyond oil markets and into the broader global economy.

From Oil Shock to Inflation Shock

The critical question for investors is no longer simply whether Brent reaches US$100.

But current spot prices are already significantly above that average.
