Satellite monitoring is central to modern disaster response. Tropical systems can intensify or change direction faster than ground-based networks can document, particularly over open water. Space-based instruments help meteorological agencies estimate cloud structure, rainfall distribution and storm organization before the system reaches densely populated coastlines.
The economic significance of a major typhoon extends well beyond immediate wind and flood damage. Storms can interrupt ports, airports, power transmission, agriculture, fisheries, manufacturing and tourism.
