Wall Street closed Friday, September 25, with a modest advance as investors balanced renewed enthusiasm for artificial intelligence against persistent concerns about energy costs, inflation and interest rates.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.34% to 51,526.74, the S&P 500 gained 0.18% to 7,718.15 and the Nasdaq Composite added 0.21% to 26,997.07, according to Reuters reporting. The gains came despite a still unsettled Middle East environment and Treasury yields that remain elevated by historical standards.

Microsoft was among the session’s strongest large-cap contributors after unveiling new capabilities for its Copilot software, including a coding tool and an always-on AI agent. Qualcomm also advanced sharply, while Nvidia, Micron, Marvell Technology and Dell participated in a broader technology rebound.

The market’s resilience reflects the continuing importance of AI-related capital spending to institutional portfolios. Investors are increasingly assessing not only chip demand, but also the potential effects of AI deployment on software subscriptions, cloud infrastructure, enterprise productivity and consumer hardware. At the same time, the scale of spending has raised questions about valuation, electricity demand and whether productivity gains will arrive quickly enough to justify current investment levels.

Energy markets remained a counterweight. Oil prices eased as traders assessed reports of a possible phased U.S.-Iran arrangement, but crude remained high enough to sustain concern about inflation and future central-bank policy. Higher yields also continue to increase the discount rate applied to long-duration technology companies.

Friday’s performance therefore represented more than a simple risk-on session. It showed that investors remain willing to support AI-linked assets when geopolitical pressure appears to soften, but the market’s advance remains dependent on developments outside the technology sector.
